Salaamz! My name is Agnes and I’m a Muslim. Alhamdulillah.
My Reversion to Islam Story.
Too pretentious? :$
Well, I grew up in a typical Catholic Mexican family, when I was about nine years, one of my aunts became a nun, which made me want to be closer to God, and that is where the journey began, I suppose.
I started to attend the convents in my hometown. My grandmother and her brother, helped the nuns with their expenses, food, shoes and especially nun habits, they make them.
At that point I was convinced that in a few years, I’d be a nun.
A few years later, my sister married a Jehovah’s Witness and I spent much of my free time with them, so I started to attend Bible studies and meetings in “Kingdom Hall” that is close to my house. It was there where I started to question both faiths.
When I turned 12, my parents enrolled me in a Catholic school, where, obviously, I had to deal with religion classes, very religious teachers and attend church every week. After a disastrous year where my questions were many and the answers were few, decided to leave the Catholic school and religion aside.
The following seven years were about carefree fun, alcohol, parties, clubs, concerts, quit school, ran away from home, depression, self-mutilation, in short, my life was a complete disaster.
Unemployed and with absolutely nothing, I moved with my sister and started a small business, with a bit of stability in my life, I began to try to find some inner peace, seeking a relationship with God, had been through many bad things and I was here, there must be a reason.
I found a book that my father had given me when I was in Catholic school, “The song of Bird” by Anthony Mello, short stories of different religions.
After reading it, I began to do some research about each faith that mentioned the book, until one day I found Islam, I downloaded a PDF file from the site of the Mosque in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. I started reading it and immediately gave my heart to this faith it fit perfectly with what I thought at the time, God is one, He is the Creator, we must only worship God. These basic concepts in Catholicism to get lost easily.
It took me about 3 months to investigate a little more about Islam until one day suddenly decided to take Shahada (my testimony of faith) by myself, with no witnesses other than Allah (swt)
Alhamdulillah
:)
asalaamualeykum!
